About the propeller textbook

motivation : electric flight

Aircraft propellers have a more or less standard form factor, which is largely dictated by the match to the typical torque and RPM of the internal combustion engine. This match is not necessarily the same for an electric motor.

  An electric flight project at the university of InHolland in Delft made me try my hand at writing a simple student textbook on propeller theory, so the students can reconsider the proper match from first principles.

new developments

The textbook project got out of hand, and led to my revisiting the whole of classical propeller theory, and in par­ticular the idea of optimizing the viscous loss along with the other losses. This is a problem which Glauert had solved only partly, and which I believe has since been mostly ignored. It became a chapter in the book which you will find on this website.

  Another aspect which is normally not treated in classical propeller theory is the lifting line vortex solution to the tip problem. This became a series of "new" chapters.

online textbook

I first cast the new textbook into a paperback form, ready for printing. But then I decided to put the text online instead, for easier and free access. This changed the layout slightly.
