Dutch roll is one of the three asymmetric "eigenmotions" of an airplane. The other two are roll damping, and the spiral dive. For an introduction to these modes, see TBW.

  Dutch roll is an unpleasant motion, which usually arises from uncoordinated control inputs on entering a turn ( either by not enough rudder, or by too much). It can also be set up by gusts. Figure 1 gives an impression of the motion for a Boeing 747-100 in cruising flight at high altitude.

In conventional airplanes, the motion is well damped, and not dangerous. However, in airplanes with pronounced wing sweep­back, it can become problematic. Such airplanes routinely need artificial yaw damping to regain pleasant flying characteristics.
